Greyfriars Jakey?

Jake Elliot comparing whiskers with a friend.........or is it?

Thanks to Nancy Ferguson for telling me that this is, in fact, actor Alex MacKenzie
who starred as "Auld Jock" the herd in the 1960 Disney film of *"Greyfriars Bobby"
which was shot partly at the West Hopes, near Gifford.

The posters above do indeed show that the actor & Jake are amazingly alike!

*This true story takes place in Edinburgh in 1865, and tells of
shepherd John Grey and his Skye terrier.
Having lost his job, Grey makes his way to the capital but soon dies
of pneumonia and is buried in Greyfriars Kirkyard.
Distraught at the loss of his master, Bobby keeps vigil at his master's graveside,
despite a caretaker with a "no dogs" rule.

With no owner, Bobby faces the problem of being an 'unlicensed dog',
but his plight is taken up by the children of Edinburgh and Bobby is saved.
He is given a collar to prove that he is not a stray and allowed to stay
by Grey's grave until he dies 14 years later.
