GIFFORD BOWLING & SPORTS CLUB

The Gifford Bowling & Sports Club is situated beyond the bridge in Station Rd.

The roots of the club are to be found in Yester Estate & the Avenue where provision was made
for estate workers & villagers to play the game of bowls.
In 1901 the Marquis of Tweeddale donated the land in Station Rd. to establish a four rink green and clubhouse.
The green was extended after the floods of 1948 destroyed the nearby mill lade.

The club has enjoyed much national and local success and has found international repute thanks
largely to long time bowler Willie Wood MBE who has travelled throughout the world playing the
game he loves and was Gold medallist at the Commonwealth Games in both 1982 and 1990.

A couple of great images which capture the busy and enthusiastic atmosphere of the recent prize-giving.
Margaret looks a bit defiant though!!!

Thanks to Bill Shiels for these photographs.

CLUB NEWS & EVENTS

No winners in the Lucky numbers this week again – over £300 up or grabs now.

The quiz night on Thursday gained some more teams but we need even more – The snowball
(if number picked matches your score then you get the kitty) was not won on Thursday so rolls over to this week.
The Winning score last week was 39 out of 60 – plenty to aim for, lets see some smart alecs this week.
£4 entry fee per team, four bottles of wine for the winning team and the chance of that snowball.

Celtic take on the mighty Man Utd this week, come along and see the action on Tuesday night.
Then there is Rangers in action on Saturday.

Also another reminder that we are having the first of our social events on 31st October (8pm).
There will be food (Curry or Pumpkin & Beef stew), cocktails and Karaoke.
Fancy Dress is optional so don’t let that put you off, come and enjoy the cocktails and be entertained from budding singers.   Your support for this event would be appreciated.
Call in for a ticket or let us know if you are interested (01620 810517 or e-mail).
Why not get some of your friends together and come along.

We hope also to have something at the end of November for St Andrews Night – more to follow on that.

If you are involved in any groups or committees and wish to use either of our separate rooms
(Committee room for groups of say 10 or Locker room fitted out with tables & chairs for larger meetings up to day 15)
give us a shout.  During the week (Monday – Wednesday) tends to be quieter for us to accommodate.
It’s your club, feel free to use it.
